cPanel backups not working

Posted by arbet, 11-11-2009, 08:53 AM
Hello, Automated cPanel backups are not working on my server for some reason. I have the same settings on another server and all is ok. But on this server, a backup does not occur. Thoughts?

Is there an entry in the crontab such as:

try to run /scripts/cpbackup

I get a password incorrect, even though the password is correct and I tried accessing the ftp server manually and it works.

Yes, this is the issue where many people are stumped, where the cPanel backup script cannot Ftp to a remote server but the manual Ftp works. The reason is, cPanel works on perl and if the Ftp password contains some characters that are used as special characters in perl scripts, cPanel interpret them as special characters and thus fail to Ftp to the remote server. Change the Ftp password to a alphanumeric one and give a try. BTW, the backup logs are saved under /usr/local/cpanel/logs/cpbackup/

Ahhh, I never knew that. Excellent to know.

Excellent! This solved my problem. On one servers, backups are running perfectly, but on the other one, the logs state that backups are up to date, but backups aren't being updated on the backup server. I will wait 24 hours and check again. I wonder why the old pass was working on one of the servers, and wasn't on the other two?

Hello, You should check load avarage on your server while backup process. I have seen many times that load kill backup process, though log shows backup has completed.

Good point as well...will check it out. Backups are running it seems, but I am out of disk space on my current plan. I have requested an upgrade. I will update this thread once my plan is upgraded.

scripts/upcp make sure the build is free from bugs

This has been fixed guys, it seems the problem was with having a non-alphanumeric password. But I still wonder why the pass was working on one cPanel server, while it wasn't on the other two...

I have been in communication with our technical analysts with regards to this situation. Have you since been able to go back to a non-alphanumeric password on this server? If not, can you let us know what the full version information for the affected server is, and also the full version information for a server not experiencing this same issue?

We've had issues with non-alphanumeric passwords in the past, particularly when performing account transfers. But it has since been resolved.

Not to hijack this thread but could this also explain some issues like Wordpress automatic plugin install/update only working with FTP credentials in the Wordpress admin when using pro-ftpd and not working when using the pure-ftp server with the same FTP credentials?
